BraceletPattern redraws every knot as you go, so you can see the finished look before tying a single knot.
How normal friendship bracelet patterns work
A normal pattern is knotted in diagonal rows. On the first row you knot strings in pairs: the first with the second, the third with the fourth, and so on. On the second row you skip the edge string and knot the second with the third, the fourth with the fifth. The rows alternate like bricks in a wall, which is why every chart, including the one BraceletPattern draws, is staggered.
The four knots
Every knot is made of two half-knots tied with one string around the other. A forward knot (↘) uses the left string twice, going right; afterwards the left string has moved to the right and its colour shows on the knot. A backward knot (↙) is the mirror image, with the right string moving left. A forward-backward knot (>) makes one forward half-knot then one backward half-knot with the same string, so it shows that string’s colour but both strings stay where they were. A backward-forward knot (<) is its mirror. Those last two are how patterns change direction and form diamonds, hearts and zigzags.
Why colours move
Because forward and backward knots swap strings, each colour travels diagonally through the bracelet. BraceletPattern follows every string through your pattern and colours each knot with the string that shows on top, so the chart is an accurate preview. The bottom row shows the order the strings end in. When it matches the top, the pattern repeats cleanly, and the tool tells you after how many rows that happens.
Designing your own
Start from a preset, set the colours, then click knots to cycle through the four types. Mirror colours copies the left half onto the right, which keeps chevrons and diamonds symmetrical. Use more rows to see how a design develops along the bracelet, and fewer to keep the chart simple to follow.
Cutting the strings
Strings that make many knots are used up faster than strings that are carried along. The length estimate counts the knots each string makes in your pattern and adds extra for tying on and off. Cut generously: a few spare centimetres are much easier than adding a new string halfway. Print the chart, or download it as an SVG, and keep it next to your work.
Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest bracelet pattern?
The candy stripe: every knot is a forward knot, so you just repeat the same row.
How do I make a diamond pattern?
Start with an inverted chevron and mirror the colours, then change a few knots to fb or bf to shape the diamonds.
Are these patterns free to use?
Yes. The patterns you make are yours.
Is BraceletPattern free?
Yes, with no sign-up or ads.
Where are my patterns saved?
In this browser only.
